Raúl Castro defied expectations and took many by surprise by selecting José Ramón Machado, a member of the Communist Party old guard, as first vice president.

Guyana, Barbados hold bilateral talks

As Guyana marked 38 years as a republic over the weekend, officials from that country met with members of the Barbados government in what both sides said was “fruitful bilateral discussions on a range of issues.”
