WASHINGTON DC, United States, January 10, 2008 - The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will give US$750,000 to Haiti to design a programme to improve the efficiency of the Péligre hydropower station which provides 25 percent of the power which the country needs.

This technical cooperation donation will see the IDB's Infrastructure Fund US$550,000 to the project, while the IDB's Special Operations Fund will contribute another US$200,000.

"The aim is to map out the actions needed in order to rehabilitate the hydropower station, which provides 25 percent of Haiti's power, and to improve its efficiency," the IDB said.

"The rehabilitation program seeks to strengthen the operational capacity of the hydropower system by refurbishing its electro-mechanic components and the main electricity-generating equipment."

The project will be implemented together with the state-owned company EDH.

The Péligre hydroelectric operation which was completed in 1971, once supplied much of Haiti's electricity, but by the late 1990s it was contributing only about one-third as much as the country needed.
