ST JOHN'S, Antigua, May 8, 2008 - Regional airline LIAT has said it will not increase ticket fares for now, despite rising fuel costs.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Darby gave the assurance on the heels of the announcement by another regional carrier, Windward Islands Airways (WINAIR), that it would add a US$12.50 fuel surcharge to one-way tickets on all flights and US$25 for round trips because of the skyrocketing fuel prices.
Darby is reported in the Antigua Sun as saying that LIAT would try to keep fares down and keep things in balance the best it could.
LIAT increased its fuel surcharge on all tickets by US$2.50 on April 11 after noting that world fuel prices had risen substantially over the last eight months.
But the CEO said there are no plans to add to that.
"Fuel prices fluctuate so when the prices go down then the surcharge would be removed. That's all we are planning at the moment," Darby said.
Meanwhile, he said LIAT would continue to work at overcoming other challenges facing the carrier, including the frequent delays which have frustrated travellers.
