GEORGETOWN, Guyana, June 18, 2008 - Sauda Kadir has been released on bail after FBI officials and Guyanese police found photos of she and her family posing with what she said were "toy guns" during a raid on her house. The FBI claimed they were high powered rifles.
It was not immediately clear what was the charge. She is the daughter of Abdul Kadir, one of the four men arrested and charged with allegedly conspiring to blow up fuel tanks linked to the JFK International Airport in New York.
Following the search of the Kadir's home, the daughter and two sons were arrested. Sauda was released on US$50 bail. The two sons remain in jail without bail. They are charged with the illegal possession of a single round of ammunition.
The Parliamentary Opposition leader, Robin Corbin, has expressed his alarm at developments saying that the family had been singled out.
"If the government and the police do not act responsibly they will make people angry," he said as he criticised President Bharrat Jagdeo for suggesting that Kadir was involved in a conspiracy. What he wanted to know was how did the president know this when the Courts had not yet heard and decided on the matter. He said Jagdeo's statements were "irresponsible and prejudicial".
