BASSETERRE, St Kitts, December 1, 2008 - The murder rate on the tiny island of St Kitts jumped again yesterday with the killing of two people at a disco, bar and restaurant in Cayon.

Dead are Desroy 'Shootout' Walwyn and Trevon 'Woxy' Francis, who were shot in the wee hours of the morning. Six others were reportedly injured in the shooting.

The killing brought to 22 the number of people killed across the island this year; compared to 17 last year.

Leader of the People's Action Movement, Lindsay Grant, said in a statement last night: "Criminals are bringing this nation under siege and the government is appearing to be helpless in doing anything about it."

"Given the size of the population, our murder rate is one of the highest in the Caribbean per capita. This is a record none of us could be proud of, and all of us must work towards making next year a different time," he added. (Caribworldnews)
