BASSETERRE, St Kitts, October 19, 2009 - The opposition People's Action Movement (PAM) in St Kitts says it will increase security for its candidates following an attack at the home of one of them over the weekend.
PAM said in a statement that on Saturday, an armed intruder broke into the home of Bernard Welsh, who will carry PAM's banner for the West Basseterre constituency, and attacked and terrorized his family, including their two young children.
It said the children were "severely traumatized" by the attack.
PAM 's leader Lindsay Grant said that, "greater efforts will have to be made from now on, for the protection and safety of all candidates and families of the People's Action Movement". "As society continues to pay the escalating price for the mounting criminal activities in the federation, a new call is being made for a joint community and national effort to renounce and rid the country of this nagging problem," he said following a visit to the Welsh family.
The governing St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party has condemned the attack and has ordered a full investigation into that incident, as well as another in which a woman was sexually assaulted. Police say the two were unrelated.
Deputy Prime Minister and MP for the same constituency which Welsh will be contesting, Sam Condor, said last night he had visited the family.
"We want to condemn it and we want to make sure that people desist from doing this wicked and evil thing. This is not a good thing for the country. It is not good for anybody," he said at a political meeting last night. Condor, who is also the Minister of Gender Affairs called on the nation to give their full support to the security forces. "We want to ensure that we continue to give the police and other law enforcement officers our full support, because I believe that the best security of our country is when all of us, each and every one of us, take full responsibility for the security of one another," the deputy prime minister added.
