Barbados private sector group launches Canada chapter

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday October 27, 2010 – The Barbados International Business Association (BIBA) headquartered in Bridgetown, Barbados has become the first trade organisation on the island to open a branch in another country.

This historic move has been taken through BIBA opening a chapter association in Canada.

“International Business in Barbados with Canadian roots represents a core component of our strength and membership. Launching a Chapter of BIBA in Canada to build on that strength is strategically important to BIBA’s goals and long term future,” BIBA’s President, Mohammed Patel said at the launch.

He noted that Canada and Barbados have experienced a rich 100-year history of trading and inter-governmental relations. Patel pointed out that many Canadian companies have international operations in Barbados and are members of BIBA.

Patel said that to further support those companies and continue the development of its Canadian members and future members, BIBA past President John Howard called upon Tom Sears, Past President of BIBA (2006-2007), now located in Canada, to spearhead the creation of a chapter of BIBA in the North American country.

The new Chapter of BIBA-Canada will allow Canada-based parent organizations to support their businesses and the mission of BIBA from their home locations in Canada. Canadian individuals who have worked and lived in Barbados as corporate members of BIBA in Barbados will also have the ability to continue their involvement and support of international business relations between Canada and Barbados even after returning to Canada.

The Mission of BIBA-Canada is to further the interests of Canadian business in Barbados and to support the continued growth of healthy business relationships between these two great trading partners. In support of this mission, BIBA-Canada will focus on the active promotion, research and support of business opportunities for companies and individuals located in Canada and Barbados.

Founded in 1999 through the merger of four distinct international industry association BIBA is a non-profit private sector organization comprising companies engaged in international business in Barbados and companies which are otherwise strategically associated with this sector. Its mission is to work with the Government of Barbados towards the development of the international business sector in the interest of its members and the Barbados economy.
