Belize joining Latin American energy group

Belize is the eighth Caribbean Community (CARICOM) state to join the organisation. The others are Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname.

BELMOPAN, Belize, November 5, 2009 – Belize has accepted an invitation, extended in May last year, to join the Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE).

OLADE is an inter-governmental agency that contributes to the integration, sustainable development and energy security of the region. It provides a wealth of products and services to member states.

Belize is the eighth Caribbean Community (CARICOM) state to join the organisation. The others are Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname.

Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines were also invited to be part of OLADE, but none of them have yet announced a decision to join.

Six Central American countries, twelve countries in South America and Mexico are also members of OLADE.

The organisation was formed as a response to the international energy crisis of the early 70s.

It says its mission is to promote agreements between its member countries and carry out actions to satisfy their energy needs by means of the sustainable development obtained from the different sources of energy.
