Caribbean360: CAL stops transporting primates for research CAL stops transporting primates for research ================================================================================ Chris Hoyos on 22/08/2011 09:19:00 LONDON, United Kingdom, Monday August 22, 2011 – Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) has stopped transporting primates destined for the research industry as the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) continues its campaign for all airlines to stop the practice. The BUAV said in a press release that the airline had confirmed in writing to the organisation that its last shipment of primates took place in 2010, and its recent website statement reflects this new position. "Caribbean Airlines will not accept primates used for laboratory research experimentation and exploitation purposes,” the airline’s website states. BUAV had been running a campaign encouraging airlines to stop transporting primates for the research industry and urging all air travellers to check whether an airline is involved in the cruel business of transporting monkeys for experiments before booking their flight. According to the BUAV, Caribbean Airlines had been a regular transporter of African green monkeys from Barbados to the United States. “We want to thank all our supporters who have taken the time to contact Caribbean Airlines, and the airline itself for making the right decision and ceasing involvement in the cruel trade in primates for research,” said BUAV’s Chief Executive Officer Michelle Thew. “The BUAV will continue its campaign to push for all airlines to prohibit the carriage of primates for this purpose.” The Caribbean carrier now joins the growing list of airlines to take a stance against “the cruel business of shipping primates around the world for experimentation”, BUAV said. Other airlines include British Airways, British Midland, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Northwest Airlines, Qantas, South African Airways, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Eva Air and China Airlines.
