Tropical system in Caribbean has 70% chance of becoming a hurricane

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday June 21, 2012 -  The National Hurricane Centre
(NHC) is reporting that a “large low pressure system located just north of the
northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula is producing an extensive area of
cloudiness, showers and scattered thunderstorms over much of the central and
eastern gulf of Mexico and the northwestern Caribbean sea.”
The NHC said that recent reports indicate the system is becoming better defined
and more conducive for development of a tropical depression during the next 24
hours.
“The system has a high chance, 70 percent, of becoming a tropical cyclone
during the next 48 hours as it moves slowly northward into the central Gulf of
Mexico” according to the latest NHC report.
The NHC indicated that if necessary, an air force reserve reconnaissance
aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system tomorrow afternoon.
Last month Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray of the Department of
Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University slightly increased their forecast
for the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane season. The season is expected to see about 13
named storms, including 5 hurricanes, with two of them being major during the
