PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday March 16, 2012 – An attempt to bring an end to
the strike at Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) took an unusual twist yesterday when
a 24-seater bus transporting strike breakers was struck by a boulder yesterday.
This is the latest twist to the TCL strike, as striking workers continue to
attack those who opted to accept individual packages offered by the company and
return to work.
TCL management described the attack in which no one was injured as an act of
terrorism after it occurred near St. Margaret’s Junction, in Claxton Bay
around 3:15 p.m.
It was reported that the bus’s glass was shattered when the boulder was thrown
into the bus, as workers were being shuttled back to their vehicles at Paraiso
Entertainment Centre in Macaulay when the incident occurred.
General Manager of TCL, Satnarine Bachew, described the incident as an act of
terrorism, and a desperate act by the union to intimidate workers exercising
their right to work.
Passengers reported hearing what sounded like a “loud explosion”, followed
by “a shower of glass” inside the bus after the boulder was thrown into the
vehicle.
However, Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) branch president, Lawrence
Renaud said he was aware of the incident, and promised that it would be
investigated.
TCL workers started what was supposed to be a 90-day strike after wage talks
between the OWTU and the TCL broke down. However, several workers accepted
individual packages offered by the company and returned to work.
It was also reported in a section of the Press that the names of all those who
returned to work were posted at the entrance of the company and the tyres of
some vehicles of company officials were punctured by nails. Click here to
