GEORGETOWN, Guyana, November 6, 2009 – The head of the teachers union in Guyana is facing charges for allegedly having sex with a girl under the age of 15 and he will spend the weekend on remand in jail.

When he appeared in court yesterday, President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Colwyn King would spend the next four days in the country’s Camp Street Prison and return to court next Monday.

He is accused of having carnal knowledge with the minor a month ago, on October 7th.

Since the charge is indictable, King was not allowed to enter a plea in the magistrate court.

However, his attorney Mark Waldron argued that the allegation against his client was malicious and was an attempt to degrade his character.

The lawyer pleaded with the court to release King on bail, but in the end Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson upheld the prosecution’s objection to bail.
