Guyana President takes conservation message to London

The presentation by President Jagdeo comes just days after Guyana and Norway reached an agreement that would see the South American nation getting US$250 million for efforts to protect its forests.

LONDON, England, November 16, 2009 – Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo is set to take his forestry conservation message to London this week.

Jagdeo will be part of a forum hosted by Global Witness in London on Wednesday.

The focus of  the discussion, according to a Global Witness statement, will be the opportunities and risks presented by a UN deal on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and its potential to deliver significant environmental and economic benefits to Guyana, its forests and its people.

The presentation by President Jagdeo comes just days after Guyana and Norway reached an agreement that would see the South American nation getting US$250 million for efforts to protect its forests. 

The money will be provided over five years. Under the agreement with Norway, Guyana promises to ensure sustainable mining and forestry practices, maintain the open and transparent dialogue on climate change that has been occurring during the past four months and use the funds provided accountably and transparently.
