KINGSTON, Jamaica, December 28, 2009 – Four men whom police believe were bringing guns to Jamaica from Haiti have been killed in a shootout with cops in the southwestern parish of St Elizabeth this morning.

The deceased have not yet been identified but police say they were part of a gang involved in the illegal guns for ganja trade with Haiti.

According to reports, it was just after 2 am when police saw the men along a road and ordered them to stop. Instead of complying they began shooting at the lawmen who returned fire.

Authorities had been keeping the men under surveillance for sometime.

“This is a clear case where sustained intelligence and monitoring of a criminal outfit has paid dividends. It took time and effort, but in the end we achieved our objective of taking illegal guns and ammunition off our streets as well as significantly disrupting the drugs for guns trade,” said acting Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington, although saying the loss of lives “is regretted and will be thoroughly investigated by the Bureau of Special Investigations”.

Two submachine guns, six nine-millimetre semi-automatic pistols, and ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Police are carrying out investigations and are also said to be on the hunt for a fifth man.
