NASSAU, Bahamas, Friday June 29, 2012 – A joint operation involving the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Royal Bahamas Police Force Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) has netted one of the largest marijuana grow field discoveries in The Bahamas since 2007.

An official statement said that the joint investigation in a secluded area of Eastern Grand Bahama led to the discovery of 30 large marijuana fields with plots containing over 50,000 marijuana plants ranging in height from one to 11 feet tall.

Ammunition was also reportedly found at the site.

The plants, which have an estimated street value of $40 million, were destroyed onsite by law enforcement officials.

The statement noted that this latest effort reaffirms the United States and The Bahamas’ shared commitment in the fight against illicit drugs and drug trafficking.

No indication as to whether anyone has been detained as a result of the operation was given in the statement.
