KINGSTON, Jamaica, Wednesday February 29, 2012 – Talks are ongoing to revive the scrap metal trade in Jamaica.

Minister of Industry and Investment and Commerce, Anthony Hylton said the ministry was presently engaging stakeholders to ensure there was agreement on the way forward.

However, he made it clear that appropriate regulation was necessary, especially as efforts were being made to stimulate the allied activities and jobs in welding, bodywork and other mechanical operations.

The scrap metal trade was banned by the former Jamaica Labour Party government last year due to high incidents of theft of private and public material. Click here to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)
