Regional assistance unlikely for REDjet
CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Friday March 23, 2012 – Regional governments are unlikely to run to the assistance of Barbados-based carrier REDjet which suspended all flights from last Friday night.
That’s according to Minister of Tourism, Mr. Lorne Theophilus, who said that should government get involved in the industry, it should go through LIAT as it was a regional carrier.
However, he stressed that the St. Lucian government would still continue to support new airlines like REDjet, as it was important to look at what was in the best interest of St. Lucia and the region.
Around 8 p.m. last Friday, REDjet announced that it was suspending all its flight operations and would be seeking out government aid to resume competition with state-backed carriers like LIAT.
The 10-month-old airline said they will continue operations if they received assistance from regional governments. Click here to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)
