Salary increases approved for Guyanese public servants
The across-the-board salary increase for public servants was approved yesterday by President Bharrat Jagdeo and brings the total granted to for the year to 8 percent.
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday November 4, 2011 – President Bharrat Jagdeo has approved across-the-board increases in salaries for all government employees retroactive to January 2011.
The increases will be payable to all public servants and members of the disciplined services, a release from the Government Information Agency stated.
“Teachers will get a three percent across the board increase with effect from January 1, 2011 on top of the five percent increase previously paid by Government with effect from the same date pursuant to the multiyear agreement concluded between Government and the Guyana Teachers Union,” it said further.
President Jagdeo has also approved an additional increase of three percent to be paid to employees of the Guyana Sugar Corporation, who were previously paid a five percent increase for 2011.
This latest decision by the president brings to eight percent, the total increase paid to all the categories of employees for 2011.
“The Government of Guyana has consistently paid increases to public sector employees over recent years, at a time when many other countries in the Caribbean and the rest of the world have imposed wage freezes and cuts in their public sector,” the release added.
The increases come as Guyanese prepare to go to the polls to vote in general and regional elections on November 28.
