Calls for police commissioner to resign or be fired
Top cop’s confessions concern government and other organizations.
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday February 10, 2012 – Commissioner of Police Henry Greene should resign from office or be fired.
This is the strong opinion coming from a number of organisations who have voiced concerns over his admission that he had sex with a woman who is now accusing him of rape.
Among those expressing concern is the Guyana government with the Alliance for Change calling on Greene to resign.
The Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) is also among those who hold the view that the police commissioner should be fired if he fails to resign.
“It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Greene has in fact lost the moral authority to lead the Guyana Police Force and should therefore no longer be required to so do,” said GAWL in a statement.
The statement added that Mr. Greene’s declaration showed that there was conduct in the office of Commissioner of Police that reflected an unacceptable approach in the execution of his duties.
In calling for a timely resolution to the situation, GAWL further accused Mr. Green of abusing his office for sexual favors, and stressed that such behavior should never be tolerated from the leader of the Guyana Police Force.
The body also called on police officers of all ranks to be professional in their approach and restore confidence in force among citizens.
Director of Public Prosecutions advised that Mr. Greene be charged with rape after the woman made accusations against him.
But, in a counter move, Mr. Greene sought an order from the High Court temporarily blocking Acting Police Commissioner, Leroy Brummel and Assistant Seelall Persaud from bringing charges against him.
He also admitted to having consensual sex with the woman after she sought his intervention in an investigation involving her, and has also sought to raise issues on her credibility through exhibits that she was the subject of a probe into alleged extortion.
