Police Commissioner cleared of rape charge

Guyana High Court rules in top cop’s favour.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Monday April 2, 2012 – Police Commissioner, Henry Green is a happy man today after a High Court ruled in his favour on a rape charge.

Green was accused of raping a 34-year-old woman at gunpoint on November 22 last year in a hotel room after she sought his assistance in dealing with an unrelated police matter.

According to reports, the court ruled that Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) failed to make a realistic assessment of the credibility of the complainant.

The court charged that the DPP’s decision to prosecute was unlawful as legally admissible statements were used to inform the decision to prosecute.

In a 64-page statement, the country’s Chief Justice, Ian Chang said there were a number of inconsistencies in the woman’s statement, and stressed that these needed to be present for a case to be made. Click here to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)
