Anna Nicole’s Legal Battle Shifts To The Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas, February 26, 2007 – The spotlight will be on the Bahamas Supreme Court today as the legal battle over who gets custody of Anna Nicole Smith’s five-month-old baby opens at a hearing here.

The late reality star’s former boyfriend, photographer Larry Birkhead, and her estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, are both fighting for custody of baby Dannielynn, who was born in the Bahamas last September and whose legal father is reportedly listed as Smith’s companion, Howard K. Stern.

“We’re ready to fight,” Debra Opri, Birkhead’s lawyer old reporters outside Nassau international airport Sunday.

While the custody battle rages on, a separate hearing is also set here that involved that home Smith had lived in prior to her passing and which helped her to gain residency status in the Bahamas. A court is being asked to decide a dispute over the ownership of the mansion that Stern continues to live in.

Meanwhile, Smith’s burial is still up in the air. Court-appointed attorney Richard C. Milstein is reportedly working out the funeral details for the Bahamas burial. 

Smith, a former Playboy Playmate and died suddenly in a Florida hotel on Feb. 8 at age 39. Her death came five months after her son Daniel passed away in a hospital room in the Bahamas after Smith gave birth to his baby sister. (Copyright
