Austria, Grenada tighten bonds

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, July 28, 2008 – The German-speaking nation of Austria is creating history in Grenada, as it seeks to tighten diplomatic relations with the Caribbean country, by establishing an honorary consulate here.

According to a report in the Barnacle Newspaper in Grenada, Daniela Grdseloff-Gwercher has been appointed Honorary Consul for Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique as preparations are put in place to officially open the consulate next month.

The development comes against the background of the two countries’ tourism links.

“It is a remarkable fact that from all continental member states of the European Union Austria has the highest number of stay over visitors to Grenada in relation to its total population,” Mrs Grdseloff-Gwercher is quoted as saying.

“Tourism plays a substantial role for our economy, just as it does for Grenada’s. As a result both nations are interested in a peaceful and prosperous international climate favourable to the further development of leisure travel.”

Mrs Grdseloff-Gwercher added that Austria would provide scholarships to Grenada to help develop human resources in the area of tourism.
