BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday July 8, 2013 – As Tropical Storm Chantal continues to move quickly westward some slight strengthening has occurred.
“Tropical Storm Chantal is located near 10.1N 48.5W or 550 miles east southeast of Barbados according to the 11 am AST advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The NHC report also indicates that Chantal “is moving west northwest near 25 miles per hour and and this general motion is expected to continue through Monday
“Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Barbados, Dominica, St Lucia, Martinique and Guadeloupe. A tropical storm watch is in effect for St Vincent and Puerto Rico” said the NHC report.
“Maximum sustained winds have increased slightly to 45 miles per hour with higher gusts” according to the hurricance center.
The estimated minimum central pressure for the system has dropped to 1005 mb.
According to Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray of the Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University, the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season is expected to see about 18 named storms, including 9 hurricanes, with four of them being major.
