BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Thursday September 8, 2016 –Opposition Leader Dr. Denzil Douglas is suggesting that government double the salary of civil servants.
He made the call for the one-off extra month’s pay on the grounds that it would help stimulate the economy.
Dr. Douglas said the twin-island federation’s public servants are hardworking, but “nervous and uncertain of their own survivability in the public service”.
And he said those civil servants, as well as the private sector would benefit from the move.
“I advise very strongly that the government pays a double salary for the celebration of the 33rd Anniversary of Independence so that there can be some economic stimulus and stimulation in the economy at this critical time,” he said.
Back in December 2014, while Dr. Douglas was still Prime Minister, the government paid civil servants twice their usual pay as a demonstration of its gratitude for their hard work.
He said at the time that the bonus would help to boost morale and provide an added stimulus to the economy.
