Cuban spies convicted

MIAMI, USA, February 28, 2007 – Former Florida International University staffers, Carlos & Elsa Alvarez, were yesterday sentenced to five-years in jail for conspiring to act as an unregistered Cuban agent.

US District Judge K. Michael Moore slammed the former professor with the maximum jail time but sentenced his wife, Elsa Alvarez to three years for harboring her husband’s illicit intelligence work and failing to report it to authorities.

The sentences come after the Alvarez’s pled guilty last December to the lesser charges and the US attorney’s office agreed to drop allegations that the couple were unregistered Cuban agents.

The Alvarez’s yesterday apologized for their actions. Judge Moore ordered them remanded on April 27 and called their crime a ‘deceit and betrayal’ of the exile Cuban community in Miami. (Copyright
