Guyana Prez. Names New Ministers

Hardbeatnews, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Mon. Oct. 31, 2005: Guyana’s President, in a slight cabinet shakeup, has named new ministers of transport and hydraulics and culture, youth and sports.

President Bharrat Jagdeo named the former executive director of the Social Impact Amelioration Program, Harry Narine Nawbatt, as the new transport and hydraulics minister.

Nawbatt replaces Minister Anthony Xavier, who was switched over to the post of minister of culture, youth and sports. That ministry had reportedly been vacant since Minister Gail Teixeira was removed and made Minister of Home Affairs following the resignation of former embattled minister, Ronald Gajraj.

Jagdeo remarked that Nawbatt’s substantial project experience as SIMAP Director is expected to move the Ministry of Public Works, which has come under criticism following the recent new flooding in Guyana, forward.

Nawbatt, 59, is a former auditor, teacher and until this appointment, project manager of the Poor Rural Communities Support Services Project.

He holds a diploma in accountancy, Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in accountancy and a diploma in Transport Studies from the University of Guyana. –
