Aide to Haiti prime minister slain in drive-by shooting

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Thursday March 28, 2013 – The Haitian government has confirmed that an aide to Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe was shot and killed by two masked men during a drive-by shooting over the weekend.

A statement from the office of the prime minister said that Georges Henry Honorat, 55, was killed on Saturday night at his home in the Delmas district of Port-au-Prince.

Police spokesman Gary Desrosiers said Honorat was shot twice and died at the scene.

Honorat also worked as the editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Haiti Progres and was secretary general of the Popular National Party (PNP) that opposed the regime of Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier and his father Francois.

Colleagues said that the newspaper had been receiving constant threats from anonymous people and blamed what they termed “popular organizations” for the killing.

In 2008, two journalists who worked for Haiti Progres were killed in an outbreak of mob violence in northern Haiti.(CMC) Click here to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)
