It’s Carnival Monday In T&T

Hardbeatnews, PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Mon. Feb. 27, 2006: It’s carnival time in Trinidad! The world renown festival is set to officially get underway at 4 this morning with the traditional Jouvert festivities.

About 100,000 revelers, wearing skimpy sequined costumes and representing 120 bands, are set to take part in the annual two-day festivities, which the great Lord Laro dubbed the ‘greatest show on the earth.’

Among the bands taking to the streets of Port-of-Spain today is Poison, which includes the Funsation crew out of New York. The New-York-based Trini crew is headed by Rhea Smith and her group of revelers will jump under the Magico Mundo banner in the Dreams section of Poison.

The island’s Ministry of Tourism has said they are expecting 50,000 visitors to the island, despite the bad rap the island has taken for its rising murder and kidnapping rates.

The revelry follows a weekend of music that included the crowning Friday night of the TSTT International Soca Monarch and the Groovy Soca Monarch titles. Both titles were captured by reigning Road March king Shurwayne Winchester, whose ‘I Can’t Wait,’ beat out ten other contenders, including last year’s winner, Bunji Garlin. Garlin was second with ‘Bomb’ while Neil “Iwer” George was third with ‘We Reach.’

Last night, the King and Queen of the band competition was underway at the Queen’s Park Savannah as part of the Dimanche Gras show.

T&T’s 2006 carnival wraps up at midnight tomorrow in time for the dawn of Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season for Catholics around the world. –
