KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thursday January 31, 2013 – A police officer is dead and five other members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are being treated gunshot wounds following a training exercise at the Jamaica Police Academy on Wednesday.
It’s reported that the policemen, all attached to Mobile Reserve of the JCF were in training at the Academy late Wednesday when a weapon was loaded with live rounds instead of blank cartridges. the weapon was fired during the exercise and the cops were hit.
According to a statement early Thursday from the communications arm of the Police Force – the Constabulary Communications Network (CCN), one of the officers succumbed to his injuries while the others are being treated for their wounds.
Meanwhile Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington has ordered that all weapons training be temporarily suspended at the Jamaica Police Academy following the death of the policeman .
He said an internal investigation will be conducted by the Inspectorate of the Constabulary to determine whether established protocols and Standard Operating Procedures were adhered to. The Commission also stated that all established and related Standard Operating Procedures will be thoroughly reviewed.
The shooting incident is being probed by Independent Commission of Investigations.
During the suspension of weapons training, the Tactical Training Village and the range at the police academy will be closed.
