KINGSTON, Jamaica, Wednesday February 24, 2016 – A pastor appeared in court yesterday faced with a charge related to an alleged lottery scam.

Tariq Mahabeir, a pastor from the western parish of Westmoreland, is accused of breaching the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transaction) (Special Provision) Act.

He was offered J$250,000 (US$2,061) and is set to appear before the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate’s Court on March 22, where he will answer to the charge of being in possession of identity information.

Mahabeir was arrested following an investigation that was launched almost a month ago, after a search of a room in his home uncovered more than 50 sheets of paper with the identity information of persons living overseas.
