KINGSTON, Jamaica, September 19, 2007 – Jamaica’s murder rate increased by a whopping 123 compared to the same period last year, according to official police statistics released yesterday.
According to police, 968 persons were murdered during the first eight months of 2007 compared to 845 for the corresponding period last year.
Additionally, last month marked a bloody month in Jamaica with the murder of 125 people compared to 92 in 2006. Ninety three of those murdered were killed in gun-related incidents while 15 women, five children and a policeman were among those murdered.
However, major crime in other areas showed a decline; dropping by three per cent, with 519 recorded this year compared to 537 for last year. And there were 34 reported cases of rape for August 2007 compared to 56 in 2006. – Hardbeatnews.com
