BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Wednesday January 3, 2018 – A 23-year-old man has been charged with the shooting death of Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne, the cousin of superstar Rihanna.
Shawayne Dashawn Williams appeared in court before Magistrate Douglas Frederick today on the murder charge and was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
He was remanded to prison and is due to reappear in court on January 31.
Alleyne, 21, was shot on Boxing Day, around 7 p.m., as he was walking through a track in the vicinity of his home. According to police, he was approached by a man who shot him several times before fleeing the scene.
Alleyne was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by private vehicle, but succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly after the news broke, Rihanna, who spent Christmas in her homeland, mourned the loss on Instagram. She shared some of the photos she took with her cousin whom she saw just the day before, and ended her message with the hashtag #endgunviolence.
Alleyne’s father and Rihanna’s uncle, Leroy Brathwaite, who was recently charged for selling knock-offs of his niece’s Puma designer sports gear, also appealed for an end to gun violence.
