PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands, September 14, 2007 – Michael Misick and his wife Lisa-Raye McCoy were among 1,500 guests who paid US$2,300 each to have dinner with US presidential hopeful Barack Obama, the government of the Turks and Caicos revealed.
The campaign fundraising was organised by Oprah Winfrey at her 23,000-square-foot mansion in Hollywood. It raised over US$3 million. It was the first time that she has supported a presidential candidate.
“I believe in him [Obama],” she said.
The premier of Turks and Caicos said he felt Obama was good for the Caribbean.
“I see the relationship between the region and more particularly, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States as being extremely important,” Misick said.
“It is vital for leaders within our region to develop a relationship with whoever might become the next president of the United States.”
Misick said he wanted political candidates to become more aware of the Caribbean.
“Recently, Caribbean and regional issues have become sidetracked by the war in Iraq. I am sure I speak for other Caribbean leaders when I say we want to occupy a place of significance on the agenda of the next US President.”
Premier Misick says he does intend to attend similar events for the leading republican candidates.
Other guests included Sidney Poitier, Lou Gossett Jr., Forest Whitaker, Tyler Perry, Chris Rock, Hill Harper.
