BRADES, Montserrat, Monday May 31, 2010 – The Royal Montserrat Police Force (RMPF) made its largest drug interdiction recently when about 200 pounds of marijuana was found on boats intercepted in the island’s waters.
According to Deputy Commissioner Paul Morris two persons have been arrested in connection with the drug seizure said to be worth a million dollars.
The drugs – tightly wrapped in cellophane and contained in seven sacks – were found when the police boat MV Shamrock intercepted the two vessels. Morris declined to give details about where the boats came from or the nationalities of those arrested.
“This is the most significant one (drug seizure) we’ve had and it’s an indicator that left unchecked there has been a steady progression in this trade on Montserrat and we hope to reverse that,” he said.
“We want to eradicate what is becoming a flourishing drug market and we hope this is just the beginning,” the senior officer added.
Deputy Commissioner Morris said the RMPF has declared zero tolerance to the movement of illegal drugs on the island.
