BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Saturday October 23, 2010 – Freundel Stuart has been selected to succeed David Thompson as Prime Minister of Barbados.
The decision was made this morning at a meeting of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) at party headquarters, shortly after Thompson’s death.
He is expected to be sworn in soon.
Stuart has been acting prime minister for several periods over the past six months, while Thompson travelled to undergo treatment for pancreatic cancer, and was serving in that position at the time of Thompson’s death.
Thompson passed away at 2:10 am today at his private residence with his family at his side.
Former opposition leader Mia Mottley, who was replaced by Owen Arthur earlier this week, has been the first Barbados Labour Party (BLP) parliamentarian to publicly give condolences.
In a statement issued shortly after his death, she said that while she and Thompson were on opposite sides of the political aisle, “there was always mutual respect which was often misunderstood in the deep, unfortunate, political tribalism of Barbados”.
Mottley said while his passing would test people’s faith and spirituality, they must never question the will of God.
