President assures that Guyana is safe for CARIFESTA X

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, April 29, 2008 – President Bharrat Jagdeo has given the region the assurance that it is safe to come to Guyana for the 10th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARFIFESTA X) in August.

He said his government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring a “safe, secure and nurturing Guyana” for the August 22 to 31 staging of the Caribbean’s leading cultural extravaganza.

Mr Jagdeo also reiterated his commitment to ensuring that all the Caribbean’s expectations for the festival were met.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony said the country was read to host the event, noting that government was working assiduously to introduce more than one-hundred events over the ten days of CARIFESTA.

He said that task would require “every hand on board” and the government therefore intended to recruit more than 2,000 volunteers to assist with the logistics of the Festival.

“Anything short of excellence would be doing the Festival and the region a disfavour,” he said.

This is the second time in the 36 years of CARIFESTA that it is being hosted by Guyana. The first CARIFESTA in 1972 was also held here.

This time around it will be hosted under the theme ‘One Caribbean; One Purpose – Our Culture; Our Life’.
