Scandal-hit St Lucia Government Minister Resigns

Public Service Minister Dr Ubaldus Raymond has resigned with immediate effect.

CASTRIES, St Lucia, Tuesday April 30, 2019 – A St Lucia Government Minister embroiled in controversy is now out of Prime Minister Allen Chastanet’s Cabinet.

Public Service Minister Dr Ubaldus Raymond, who was allegedly involved in a salacious conversation with a woman, a recording of which went viral on social media earlier this month, has stepped down with immediate effect and Chastanet said he had accepted the resignation “in the best interest of the country”.

“Dr Raymond has served our country well and in several capacities including Leader of Government Business in the Senate, and previously as the Minister in the Ministry of Finance. I thank him and his family for his years of service to our nation,” he said in a brief statement yesterday.

Earlier this month, the government announced that investigations had been launched into “recent information being circulated in the public domain surrounding the Minister”, and that he had proceeded on leave. It said that after an initial probe, more information had come to light which warranted further investigations by the relevant authorities.

In his statement, Prime Minister Chastanet said his acceptance of Raymond’s resignation in no way affects the ongoing investigations.

“The Government remains committed to bringing closure to this matter,” he said.

This is not the first scandal involving Raymond. In 2017, two 18-year-old women were charged with blackmail following the leak of nude photos online. In October last year, he said the young women had apologized to him and the case had come to conclusion.
