Sparrow To Mark 70th Birthday In T&T

Hardbeatnews, PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Thurs. June 30, 2005: The Mighty Sparrow, Dr. Slinger Francisco, is back in his adopted homeland of T&T to perform at four shows to mark his 70th birthday.

The Birdie on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on President George Maxwell Richards at Presidents House and said he aims to prove the Bible wrong on the three score and ten life span by being around “for three score and many more.”

Sparrow, who also celebrates 50 years in the entertainment business, was lauded by the President as the world’s best calypsonian.

The singer, of song’s like ‘Congo Man,’ will perform on July 7th at Port of Spain’s Queen’s Hall and on July 8th at Guaracara Park. The following two days he will play the Jean Pierre Sports Complex and Shaw Park, Tobago, respectively. Dr. Francisco officially turns 70 on July 9.

Sparrow is the only calypsonian to date to receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of the West Indies. Sparrow received the honor in 1987 when President Richards was principal of UWI.
He has won the national Monarch and the Road March eight times, a feat unmatched by any other calypsonian. Sparrow has also achieved the unique double of winning the Monarch and Road March titles in the same year three times – 1956, 1960 and 1972 – a feat still to be matched. –
