Sports minister lauds Asafa Powell

KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 28, 2007 – Jamaica’s Minister of Sports, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, has lauded the World’s fastest man on winning a major IAAF award.

Grange paid tribute to Asafa Powell just days after he won the IAAF Performance of the Year Award for his 9.74 seconds record-breaking performance in Rieti, Italy earlier this year. Powell was presented with the award Sunday during the celebrations of the World Athletics Gala hosted by International Athletic Foundation Honorary President, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and IAF & IAAF President Lamine Diack.

“Once again on behalf of the Government and the people of Jamaica, congrats!” said Grange, adding its “A FASA WAY TO GO.”

Powell has promised gold at the Beijing Olympics next year barring injury.

Meanwhile, three-time World champion Tyson Gay was named the 2007 Male World Athlete of the Year while Meseret Defar was named the 2007 Female World Athlete of the Year. The newcomer of the year award went to the Bahamas’ Donald Thomas. (
