CASTRIES, St Lucia, Monday January 15, 2018 – Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenace has officially become St Lucia’s new Governor General.

He took the Oath of Office last Friday in a ceremony in Parliament, where he assured that he would be a Governor General for all the people.

After taking the oath, he stressed that his new position was one of unity, and he would stay true to that.

“During my inauguration as President of the Senate in 1993, I did assure the Senate, as some may still recall, [that] I am not less the present of the opposition for being appointed by the government. This was meant to show that there was a certain sacrosanctity inherent in certain offices, that demanded unwavering impartiality. That same sentiment I repeat here today, for a Governor General is a symbol of unity to bind us together as one. This for me is the stamp and hallmark of our true parliamentary democracy,” he told the gathering.

Sir Neville, who succeeds Dame Pearlette Louisy who retired from office at the end of last year, is a former Member of Parliament and President of the Senate.

He has previously served as St Lucia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Sir Neville was intricately involved in the movement for Windward Island unity. The elder statesman, who is highly respected in the legal fraternity, retired from active political service in 2006 and has since written extensively on the island’s Constitution.
