London, England, June 29, 2006 – Jamaica’s Trecia Smith, the winner of the World Championships final in Helsinki, Finland last summer, along with Cuba’s silver medallist Yargelis Savigne, are among the top Caribbean athletes set to compete this weekend – from July 2 – at the Athens Super Grand Prix ‘Tsiklitiria – OPAP’ 2006, which is part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour.
Smith and Savigne are among the top jumpers at the competition that will also see the likes of Greece’s Olympic silver medallist Hrisopiyi Devetzi, Sudan’s experienced Yamile Aldama and Russia’s Anna Pyatykh and Tatyana Lebedeva.
In the women’s 100-m, the Bahamas’ Chandra Sturrup and her compatriot Debbie Ferguson McKenzie will face-off against American world champion in Helsinki, Lauryn Williams while Cuba’s javelin record holder, Osleidys Menendez, is set to defend her title.
Meanwhile, Justin Gatlin may be looking to own the title of world’s fastest man and move past Jamaica’s Asafa Powell ahead of their clash in Britain late next month. Gatlin is set to perform in Athens Saturday against a field that includes Portuguese Francis Obikwelu, and Britain’s Jason Gardener. (Hardbeatnews.com)
